Purchasing Guide (In Spike vs Blooming Size)

In Spike (Flowering)

If you purchase an orchid in spike, it is in a stage of developing a flower spike that may bloom. There are many different stages of spikes, from just beginning of development to about to or fully opened blooms.

Sequential / Continuous bloomers have blooms one after another. Although the previous blooms may have dropped, it will continue to bloom with proper care.

End of - Means the bud are no longer at it's peak potential or nearing it's end. The spike may fully expire if there is wait time for shipping.

Shipping In-Spike: We believe we provide the highest quality of packaging to preserve a spike. However, by purchasing in-spike you are responsible for the risk if the buds blast (failing) or, the spike breaking is always present when shipping orchids in spike. Damaged buds or spikes will not be replaced, these plants will bloom again with proper care.

Blooming Size (No Flowers)

Our maturity terminology is an estimation at what size the plant is able to flower. It is based on other photos and experience. In optimal conditions, smaller orchids have surprised us with beautiful blooms. On the other hand, there have been larger orchids that have refused to spike.

Seedling size (SS): 2 years or more until bloom
Near Blooming Size (NBS): should bloom within 1-2 years
Blooming Size (BS): should bloom within 6 months, or have previously bloomed

General Culture and Care Information (Oncidium Intergeneric)

*Cultural and care information is based on average Oncidium care, use it as guide and should be adapted to suit your environment. Some Oncidium intergeneric hybrids may have more specific care. Always do thorough research for your planties.

🌡 Temp: Oncidium intergeneric hybrids can range from Cool to Hot (☀️12-30°C/🌑9-22°C). Most Oncidium intergenerics will grow in regular intermediate to warm temperatures. However for optimal results, research the native habitat and temperature range of your orchid’s parent species.

💧 Water: When the plant is actively growing (when you see a new growth), water when medium has just begun to dry out but is still slightly damp. When the plant is completing it's active growth let it dry more, this encourages to move into flowering cycle and come out of vegetative growth. When it is dormant (not actively growing), allow dry-out for general oncidiums.

☁️Humidity: 35-50%+, ensure medium to high airflow to dry out any water droplets on leaves to prevent spotting.

✨ Tip: Spotting on leaf. Some Oncidium intergeneric hybrids are prone to tiny black spots on their leaves which look like freckles if the water is too cold or droplets are left on leaves for long periods (days) when you water the plant and it gets on the foliage. It is simply cosmetic damage and you don't need to worry. To reduce the likelihood of more spots developing, water carefully (or bottom water) and provide sufficient airflow.

💡 Light: Bright Indirect to Low-Medium direct

🇨🇦 Summer Bright indirect to Medium direct, SouthEast or West exposure. Avoid the brightest 2 hours of the days during peak summer months. Direct sun exposure for 3-4 hours in the morning or evening best.

🇨🇦 Winter: Any direct sunlight available. Artificial supplementary light recommended to extend to 10-12 hour light period during winter or low light homes.

🌰 Media: Sphagnum Moss and/or Fine bark mix combination. Best time to repot is when there is sign of a new growth. The plant should be positioned in the pot so that the newest growth is farthest away from the edge of the pot, allowing the maximum number of new growths before crowding the pot. Keep humidity high, fast wet to dry cycles in the medium until new roots form. If it's new bark, make sure to soak heavily. Oncidiums can also be mounted.

🧪: Fertilize: Only when it's actively growing in vegetative stage - typically when a new growth or bulb emerges and is growing. Increase as the bulb gets more mature to maximize growth potential in the bulb to get highest chance of inflorescence (flowering). We recommend MSU & Marphyll rotation in low dosage every other or 3 watering and allow water flushing in between.
